In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), Rubie's Costume Co. Inc.,of Richmond Hill, N.Y., is recalling about 6,000children's vampire capes and about 6,000 children's witchbrooms. The capes and the brooms, which fail to meet federalmandatory standards for flammability, could ignite readilyand present a serious risk of burn injuries to children.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Fisher-Price, of East Aurora, N.Y., is conducting a voluntary recall involving up to 10 million battery-powered Power Wheels ride-on cars and trucks. The vehicles' electrical components can overheat and cause fires. Children can suffer injuries from fires and house fires can occur. Additionally, wiring problems can prevent the vehicles from stopping.

Two safety recalls were conducted by firmsin cooperation with the CPSC. Great American Toy Co. Inc.,of Port Washington, N.Y., is recalling about 18,700 stuffedcrabs. The crab's antennaes have sharp wires, presentinga puncture wound hazard to children. Schweiss Distributing Co., ofFairfax, Minn., is recalling to repair approximately 500 bottom-operated, bi-fold doors. The doors lack a safety shield which could allow door operators and bystanders to become entrapped in movingdoor parts, such as the drive drums and cables, causingserious injuries such as amputations and fractures.

In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), Playwell Toy Inc. of LakeForest, Calif., is recalling the mallets in approximately200,000 individually sold xylophones, 150,000 Little OnesTMInfant three-piece musical gift sets, and 1,800 LittleOnesTM Infant five-piece musical gift sets. The rounded endsof the xylophone mallets are smaller in diameter than the1.75-inch standard for small balls. The mallets can getstuck in the throats of young children, blocking theirairways, and possibly causing death.

The U.S. Consumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC) and Central Sprinkler announced today thenationwide recall of approximately 8.4 million Omega brandfire sprinklers manufactured since 1982 by Central SprinklerCorp. and its subsidiary, Central Sprinkler Co., ofLansdale, Pa. CPSC alleges that Omegas are defective andcould likely fail in a fire. This recall announcementfollows the resolution of the lawsuit filed by theCommission staff against these companies on March 3, 1998.

These GFCI circuit breakerscould overheat and lose their ability to prevent injury ordeath.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer ProductSafety Commission (CPSC), Royal Centurian Inc. and its affiliateRoyal Sovereign Corp., both of Englewood, N.J., are voluntarilyrecalling about 39,300 portable heaters. The mechanism whichrotates the heater side-to-side can wear through the insulationof electrical wiring inside the heater's base. In addition, someof the connections between the electrical wires and othercomponents inside of the heater may be faulty. Either of theseconditions can result in a fire.

(1) S-B Power Tool Co., of Chicago, Ill., is recalling about 150 Skil model 6464 hammer drills. A wiring problem presents the possibility of an electric shock or electrocution in these drills. (2) Bargain Wholesale, of City of Commerce, Calif., is recalling about 7,000 units of the Onika Steam/Dry Spray Iron. The irons have inappropriate size wiring, which can cause a fire.

In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), Philips ConsumerElectronics Company, of Atlanta, Ga., is recalling 25,500Philips Magnavox home audio theatre systems for free repair.The system's speaker voice coil can overheat and lead to aspeaker fire, presenting a fire hazard to consumers. Philips has received four reports of speaker fires, with oneresulting in scorched carpeting. No injuries have beenreported.
