WASHINGTON, Sept. 11, 2002--Park 100 Foods Inc.,
a Tipton, Ind., establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 2,200
pounds of chicken base paste because of misbranding, including undeclared
allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection
Service announced today.
The products are considered misbranded because
the retail package is labeled as chicken base paste but contains pork base
paste. The ingredient statement for chicken base paste does not list known
allergens that are present in the pork base paste (soy protein and wheat
gluten). Persons who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy or wheat
run the risk of possible allergic reactions if they consume this product.
The products being recalled are 1-pound packages
of "CLASSIC TUREEN Chicken Base Paste." Each package label has a code of
"84525," and an establishment code of "P-6798" inside the USDA seal of
inspection.
The product was produced on May 31 and
distributed to wholesale establishments in Indianapolis.
"We urge consumers who have sensitivities or
allergies to soy or wheat to check their refrigerators and freezers," said
Dr. Garry L. McKee, FSIS administrator. "If they find any of the products
listed above, consumers should return them to the point of purchase."
The problem was discovered by Park 100 Foods Inc.
Consumers with questions about the recall may
contact Brenda Jahnke, sales coordinator, at (317) 585-9598. Media with
questions may contact David Alves, vice president, at (765) 675-3480.
Consumers with other food safety questions can
phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-800-535-4555. The
hotline is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time), Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety
messages are available 24 hours a day.
