WASHINGTON, July 12,
2002—Zacky Farms, LLC, a Stockton, Calif.,
firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately
22,500 pounds of franks that were incorrectly
labeled as beef, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection
Service announced today. The franks actually
contain turkey rather than beef.
The products being
recalled are 16-ounce packages of "SAFEWAY
JUMBO beef franks." Each package label bears
either "SELL BY AUG28, 2E EST. 898" or "USE BY
AUG28, 1E EST. 898."
The product was produced on June 22, and
distributed to retail stores in Alaska,
Arizona, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho,
Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon,
Washington, Washington, DC, and Virginia.
The product
label incorrectly listed beef as an ingredient
instead of turkey.
"FSIS ensures that
meat and poultry products are safe, wholesome,
and accurately labeled," said Linda Swacina,
FSIS acting administrator. "We urge consumers
with concerns about the mislabeled product to
return it to the point of purchase."
The problem was
discovered during a quality control check by
company employees, who notified FSIS.
