WASHINGTON, June 4, 2002 – Vanguard Culinary
Group, LTD., a Fayetteville, N.C., establishment, is voluntarily recalling
approximately 37,400 pounds of frozen meat loaf that contains an undeclared
ingredient (anchovy), the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and
Inspection Service announced today.
Anchovies are a known allergen. Persons who have
an allergy or severe sensitivity to anchovies run the risk of possible
allergic reactions if they consume this product.
The products being recalled are 24 pound boxes of
"Ryan’s, Steaks, Buffet & Bakery, Old-Fashioned Meatloaf." Each box contains
four, six-pound trays. Each box bears a product code numbered "2143" or
lower. Each box also bears "EST. 8334" inside the USDA seal of inspection.
The product was produced before May 24, 2002 and
distributed to restaurants and distributors nationwide.
"We want consumers to be aware of the recall,"
said Linda Swacina, acting FSIS administrator. "Diners with sensitivities to
anchovies may wish to ask if their meals contain the recalled product."
The problem was discovered by an FSIS inspector.
Media with questions about the recall may contact
Charles G. Manis, company president, at (910) 484-8999. Consumers with
