Pennsylvania Firm Recalls Chicken Products Because Of MisbrandingWASHINGTON, Feb. 13, 2002--Hanover Foods Corp., a Centre Hall, Pa., establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 132,000 pounds of frozen chicken pie products because of misbranding, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. The products are considered misbranded because they contain only 10.5 percent chicken, rather than the 14 percent required by FSIS' standard of identity for chicken pie. The problem was discovered by an FSIS inspector. The products being recalled are cases containing six 2 lb. cartons of "Myers Bake & Serve CHICKEN PIE With White Chicken." Each case and individual carton bears one of the following package codes:
Each case bears the establishment code "P-462" inside the USDA seal of inspection. However, each individual carton bears the establishment code "P-20818" inside the USDA seal of inspection. The product was produced between March 28, 2000 and Jan. 8, 2002, and distributed to retail and institutional establishments in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Jersey. "FSIS wants consumers to be aware of the recall," said Margaret O'K. Glavin, acting FSIS administrator. "Consumers who have concerns about the product should return it to the point of purchase." Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Tim Mechler, vice president of research and development, Hanover Foods, at (717) 632-6000, ext. 3966.
