Puerto Rico Firm Recalls Beef Sausages For Mislabeling

WASHINGTON, March 27, 2003—Provisiones Legrand Inc., a San Juan, Puerto Rico, firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 13,000 pounds of canned beef sausages from Brazil that were incorrectly labeled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The products are mislabeled because they contain only beef, not beef and poultry, as declared on the ingredient label. Brazil is not approved to ship poultry products to the U.S.

The products being recalled are 36 lb. cases of “MAPLE LEAF VIENNA SAUSAGES In Beef Broth.” Each case contains six, six lb. cans. The cans bear one of the following stamped codes: “LR 021112,” “LR 021113” or “LR 021118.”

The products were produced in Brazil in November 2002, and imported by Provisiones Legrand Foodservice Inc., then distributed to institutions in Puerto Rico.

“FSIS wants consumers to be aware of the recall,” said Dr. Garry L. McKee, FSIS administrator. “Institutions that have concerns about the mislabeling of this product should return it to the point of purchase.”

Consumers and media with questions about the recall may contact Salvador Diaz Canseco, general manager, at (787) 783-0011.

Consumers with food safety questions can phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at l-800-535-4555. The hotline is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.
