Oklahoma Firm Recalls Steak Product For Undeclared Allergens

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10, 2000--Advance Food Co., Inc., an Enid, Okla., firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 211,000 pounds of steak product because it may contain an undeclared blend of buttermilk and whey, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today.

Milk and whey products are known allergens. Persons who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk or whey products run the risk of possible serious allergic reactions if they consume these products.

The products being recalled are "STEAK FOR COUNTRY FRYING - Fully Cooked Cubed Beef Steak Fritters" in 2.5 pound packages. "Est. 2260Y" appears inside the USDA mark of inspection on the package. The product was distributed at the retail level throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

The recall applies to packages that do not declare "Buttermilk Blend (Buttermilk, Whey)" in the ingredient statement on the carton and are marked with one of the following identifying code numbers printed on the back of the carton: the letter D followed by any four digit number; or one of these specific codes: E0012, E0071, E0141, E0191, E0221, E0251, E0261, or E0311.

"Because of the potential hazard for people with milk and whey allergies, we urge those consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers. If those consumers find the recalled products, they should not eat them and should return them to the point of purchase," said Thomas J. Billy, FSIS administrator.

The problem was discovered by the company, who alerted FSIS that the ingredients were missing from the package=s ingredient statement.

Anyone concerned about an illness or allergic reaction should contact a physician immediately.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact David Holland, director of customer service, Advance Food Co., tel. (580) 213-4499.

Consumers with questions about food safety may phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-800-535-4555. The hotline is staffed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday, and recorded information is available 24 hours a day.
