Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Dried Cabbage VegetableContact: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Brooklyn, NY -- June 15, 2005 -- Lion Pavilion Ltd., 518 Gardner Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11222 is recalling Dried Cabbage Vegetable (product of China) because it may contain undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. The recalled Dried Cabbage Vegetable in plastic bags, 8.8 oz. (250 g), were sold in New York State. The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of sulfites in packages of Dried Cabbage Vegetable which did not declare sulfites on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
