WASHINGTON, March 27, 2003—Jose Santiago Inc.,
a Bayamon, Puerto Rico, firm, is voluntarily
recalling approximately 5,900 pounds of canned
beef sausages from Brazil that were
incorrectly labeled, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection
Service announced today.
The
products are mislabeled because they contain
only beef, not beef and poultry, as declared
on the ingredient label. Brazil is not
approved to ship poultry products to the U.S.
The
products being recalled are 36 lb. cases of
“MAPLE LEAF VIENNA SAUSAGES In Beef Broth.”
Each case contains six, six lb. cans. The cans
bear one of the following stamped codes: “LR
021105,” “LR 021106,” “LR 021107” or “LR
021111.”
The
products were produced in Brazil in November
2002, and imported by Jose Santiago Inc., then
distributed to institutions in Puerto Rico.
“FSIS
wants consumers to be aware of the recall,”
said Dr. Garry L. McKee, FSIS administrator.
“Customers who have concerns about the
mislabeling of this product should return it
to the point of purchase.”
Consumers with questions about the recall may
contact Evelyn Renovales, customer supervisor,
at (787) 288-8835. Media with questions about
the recall may contact Rafael Santiago, vice
president, at (787) 288-8835.
