"King Cotton" and "Seitz" Cajun Smoked Sausage Recalled

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 1997--King Cotton Foods, a Memphis, Tenn., food processing company and Seitz Foods, a St. Joseph, Mo., food processing company are voluntarily recalling 827 cases of one pound packages of "King Cotton Cajun Smoked Sausage" and 397 cases of "Seitz Cajun Smoked Sausage" that was possibly underprocessed.

The "King Cotton Cajun Smoked Sausage" was distributed to warehouses and stores in Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas. "Seitz Cajun Smoked Sausage" was distributed in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Arkansas, Minnesota, and Nebraska. "EST.18 " appears inside the USDA inspection seal on the product label and a "use or freeze by" date of Jan. 16 is on the side of the packages of "King Cotton" sausage. "Seitz" sausage bears the "use or freeze by" date of Jan. 9. No other product produced is affected by the recall.

"Because of the potential hazard of spoilage and of food-borne disease from consumption of undercooked or underprocessed meat and poultry products, we urge consumers who have purchased the suspect product to return it to the place of purchase," said Thomas J. Billy, administrator of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection 'service.

FSIS officials said both Seitz and King Cotton Foods notified both the public and their distributors by press release and other means.

Consumers with questions about the recall may call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-800-535-4555. The hotline can be reached from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. This number also provides access to a telecommunications device for deaf and hearing-impaired consumers. Consumers may also wish to contact Seitz Consumer Helpline at (800) 2555-2552 or King Cotton Consumer Helpline at (800) 925-3326.
