Merex Corporation Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Sun Dried TomatoesContact: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Yonkers, NY -- April 13, 2005 -- MEREX CORPORATION, 1120 SAW MILL RIVER ROAD, YONKERS, NY 10710 is recalling 8 oz. packages of Bon Campo sun-dried tomatoes because they may contain undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life- threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. The recalled 8 oz. Bon Campo sun-dried tomatoes are packaged in uncoded plastic containers and labeled as a product of Turkey. They were sold throughout New York State. The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Department Food Laboratory personnel, revealed the presence of undeclared sulfites in the Bon Campo sun dried tomatoes in packages which did not declare sulfites on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
