Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Casale Sun-Dried TomatoesContact: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Utica, NY -- March 22, 2005 -- Casa Imports Inc. is recalling Casale Sun-Dried Tomatoes because it may contain undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. The recalled Casale Sun-Dried Tomatoes, are packed in five pound bags and labeled crop: 2003. They are a product of Turkey and were sold in New York State. The recall was initiated after routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of undeclared sulfites in Casale Sun-Dried Tomatoes in packages which did not declare sulfites on the label. The consumption of ten milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
